Red Cross youth volunteer raffles painting to raise funds for the Horn of Africa
A raffle was recently held at the Canadian Red Cross National Office for a painting inspired by the drought in the Horn of Africa. The piece, entitled Resilience, was submitted by Daniella Barreto, a 20-year-old artist and long-time Red Cross volunteer who interned with the Humanitarian Issues Program in Ottawa this past summer.
"The painting captures the dignity and humanity of people who go through such hardship," says Daniella. "It celebrates the strength of the women who have walked unbelievable distances to keep their children safe."
The raffle raised an incredible $845 in support of the Red Cross response to the drought in the Horn of Africa.
"I love to paint and thought I would try to help in a small way by donating the painting"the response was great," adds Daniella.
Daniella has been working with the Red Cross Humanitarian Issues Promotion since 2007. She has now returned to Vancouver, BC, where she will begin preparing for Humanity Strikes Back, a Youth TAP event in February.
