Being a Canadian Red Cross volunteer can change your life
Volunteering for the Canadian Red Cross can change your life, just ask Luc Londei-Leduc. A Canadian Red Cross volunteer for eight years, Londei-Leduc saved someone’s life while working as a team leader for the First Aid services team at an event in Montreal.
Although all first aid teams carry a complete first aid kit and a two-way radio, which allows them to remain in contact with the dispatcher, first aiders never know what to expect. Londei-Leduc, a 27 year old native of Montreal, was on duty when he saw someone severely injure themselves, and immediately rushed over to help the victim. In a short while, the victim stopped breathing and Londei-Leduc managed to save their life.
First aid services are present in many festivals and major events. “We are the first responders. We can make the difference,” he says. The most common calls involve falls, fainting, musculoskeletal injuries and poisonings, but it also happens that the first aid volunteers can assist someone who is suffering from a cardiac arrest.
For him, volunteering has not only shown him his path in life, but it also helped build an interesting social network. His activities within the Canadian Red Cross have also offered him the opportunity to fill important and exciting positions that he would not have experienced as an employee. “Being a volunteer for the Canadian Red Cross is out of the ordinary,” he says for anyone tempted for by the adventure.
By working as a first-aid volunteer, Londei-Leduc was inspired to go back to school and take medicine after completing a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. He is now finished, and will soon be doing his medical residency.
