A youth from Nova Scotia interning in Nicaragua
Lee-Anne, a 26 year old from Halifax, Nova Scotia, is currently interning in Nicaragua with the Nicaraguan Red Cross. The project she is working on, called ENLACE, aims to improve health practices for children under the age of 5, as well as women and men of reproductive age.
The internship is eight months long, with five months overseas and three months in a Canadian city. Organized by the Atlantic Council for International Cooperation, Lee-Anne discovered this opportunity through a friend who saw it advertised on the Canadian Red Cross website.
“I knew the Canadian Red Cross was a great organization with a lot of different programs and I was interested in helping out,” says Lee-Anne. “I also had previously been to Honduras, in Central America, on an exchange program and I really wanted to go back. This seemed like the perfect fit.”
Recently graduating with a Bachelor’s of Social Work, which focused on community development, Lee-Anne wanted to get involved with a project where she could contribute in a community-oriented setting. Although she is still unsure of her plans after the internship, she does know that wherever she ends up, she hopes to keep ties with the community that she has found in Nicaragua.
