St. John's School Establishes Red Cross Response Team

A high school in St. John's has become the first in Newfoundland and Labrador where students have created their own Red Cross first aid response team to assist with injuries or medical emergencies in class or at other events at their school.

Nineteen students at Bishops College High School received certification for completing Canadian Red Cross standard first aid training. Oceanex Inc. covered expenses including course fees, t-shirts to identify team members and supplies including first aid kits, mannequins and other training aids for use by current and future team members.

In addition to first aid responses, the student team will promote a safe, healthy school environment and the value of first aid training, and will provide a visible safety presence at assemblies and other school events by wearing Red Cross marked T-shirts.

"These Red Cross response team members have the skills and confidence to assist students and staff if needed by applying their first aid training to assessing the situation and responding appropriately to events such as choking, burns, bleeding, joint or bone injuries, diabetic emergencies, seizures, allergic reactions or asthma," said Wayne Young, Atlantic region director of injury prevention for the Canadian Red Cross.

"In addition to providing life-long skills that save lives and prevent further injuries, first aid training sharpens decision-making, encourages teamwork and teaches these young adults to assess and manage risk, stay safer themselves and promote safety to others."
