Youth volunteer recounts “amazing opportunity” five years on
At only 23 years old, Red Cross volunteer Kimberley Vibert was deployed to assist in the emergency relief efforts following hurricane Katrina.
A committed Red Crosser, Vibert had been working with her local Red Cross branch in Thunder Bay for a year and a half when the call came for help. After the hurricane pummelled through the States, Vibert knew the needs were great and with her experience as a Red Cross disaster volunteer she could make a difference.
“Many Canadians saw the images of devastation in the news after Katrina,” says Vibert. “To have experienced being part of the response first hand and knowing we were making a difference thanks to the support of Canadians made me very proud.”
While in Louisiana, Vibert worked with the American Red Cross to meet the urgent humanitarian needs of thousands of people. She assisted in coordinating emergency accommodations and supported a food program that provided 40,000 – 60,000 meals a day.
“Our work would not be possible without the incredible efforts of volunteers like Kimberley,” adds Sue Featherstone, manager of volunteer resources at the Canadian Red Cross. “It is exciting when Canadian youth are motivated to make a difference and we are proud to provide them with opportunities to have a positive impact.”
Vibert’s volunteer work in Baton Rouge has lead to many personal and professional achievements. “During my three week deployment I gained leadership skills, networked, and felt a sense of achievement for my efforts in helping out a community in need,” she says.
